Caring for Your Collection: A Simple Checklist

Most artworks are lost to neglect, not time. A few minutes of care a month is all it takes to keep a collection looking gallery-fresh for decades — and the same habits keep your plants thriving beside it.

Caring for Your Collection: A Simple Checklist

Dust Gently, Often

Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a wide, soft brush and sweep lightly once a week. Never use water or cleaning sprays on a painted surface — they can damage varnish and paint over time.

For prints behind glass, clean the glass with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Dust the frame, and resist the urge to touch the surface itself.

Watch the Light

Direct sunlight is the fastest enemy of color. Ultraviolet rays fade pigments and yellow paper, so keep artworks out of harsh sun and away from heat sources like radiators.

If a wall gets strong afternoon light, use UV-protective glazing or hang the piece elsewhere — your art will thank you for decades.

Manage Humidity

Aim for 40–55% relative humidity. Too dry cracks canvas and wood; too damp invites mold and warping. A simple hygrometer plus a small dehumidifier or humidifier does the job.

Bathrooms, kitchens, and exterior walls are the usual trouble spots — avoid hanging originals there unless conditions are controlled.

Storage That Protects

Store flat or upright with acid-free tissue and corner protectors, away from basements and attics where temperature swings are extreme. Never stack paintings face to face.

And yes — the same logic applies to your plants: keep them off radiators and out of drafts, and rotate pots a quarter turn each week so growth stays even.

A Monthly 10-Minute Routine

Once a month, check frames for loose hardware, inspect canvases for bulges, glance at the back for signs of moisture, and dust everything with fresh hands.

Ten minutes, every month. That is the entire secret of a collection that outlives trends.
